Kinkaku-ji Temple aka The Golden Pavilion

The first place we went was Kinkaku-ji Temple, the site of the Golden Pavilion. The compound was built in the 1100's as the estate of an aristocrat but the Golden Pavilion was added in 1397 by a retired shogun. He ordered that after his death the estate to be turned into a Zen temple which it has been since he died in 1422. The Golden Pavilion is only one of the several buildings that make up the entire compound and overall the place is very scenic.
